Practice Project Proposal

Appropriated Process Photography

Our technology has allowed for the rapid creation and dissemination of images. With this comes an overabundance of the production of existing images. This project is an exploration into the process of appropriation through the inversion of colors. Project will consist of digital and physical manipulation of existing images. Photos will be taken with different types of cameras (DSLR, 35mm, polaroid).

As instructed by the Critical Art Ensemble in the “Do It (At Home)” guide, I will take photos of existing images from the television, laptop, and smartphone device. The images will be manipulated in color, size, contrast, and resolution. The goal is to alter the existing images by placing them into a new context. It is my hope that this process will create a new experience for the viewer.

Deliverables will consist of the processed photographs split into categories according to the camera it was taken with. The final outcome of the project will consist of a curated portion of printed images from the collection to be placed on a wall for evaluation and viewing. The sizes of the images will vary depending on the intensity of the processed image. This public exhibition will ideally be in the IDEAS symposium. The collection will also be made available in a 10×8 book as well as digitally on an interactive website.
